How do I tell which spares suit my helmet and blower generation?

Use the labels on the helmet and the blower unit and the manual that came with them. Makers often change blower, battery and filter designs between generations, so parts that look alike may not be interchangeable. A part number on the old part, or in the manual's parts list, is the surest match.

HSE guidance says to follow the manufacturer's instructions for maintenance and, ideally, to source replacement parts from the original manufacturer so the equipment keeps performing as intended. How can I tell the headband is worn and needs replacing?

A headband carries the helmet's weight and sets how it sits on your head, so wear shows up as comfort problems. Look for cracked or stretched plastic, a ratchet or adjuster that slips, worn or hard sweatband padding, and loose or damaged mounting points.

A helmet that drops, tilts or will not hold its position can let the visor sit wrongly and spoil your view and your protection. Replace the headband with the part made for your helmet, and fit it as the manual shows. Sweatbands are often replaced separately, so you may not need a whole new headband.

What does an odour or carbon filter add to a particle filter?

An odour filter, usually activated carbon, is fitted as an add-on to reduce smells and some irritants. It does not replace the particle filter, which is what catches fume and dust. HSE notes that gases such as ozone, especially from TIG welding of stainless steel and aluminium, and nitrogen oxides from arc welding can irritate the airways.

Makers generally describe carbon add-ons as being for nuisance odours rather than a rated gas protection, so check the manual for what yours is intended for. If gases are a real concern on your jobs, your risk assessment decides what filtration you need. Do not wait for a smell to tell you a filter has failed.

How do I choose the strength of a magnifying lens?

A magnifying lens, sometimes called a cheater lens, fits inside the helmet for close or fine work. Its strength is in dioptres, and a higher number gives more magnification. Pick enough to see the weld clearly without straining your eyes, since too strong a lens can make your work harder to judge.

If you wear glasses, discuss it with an optician as the lens works alongside your correction. Check the lens size and mounting suit your helmet and filter, keep it clean and replace it when scratched. Starting with a lower strength is usually the safer way to find what suits you.
