No more “too big” or “too tight”

Optrel present the only headgear in the market to feature a headband system that offers uniform hemispherical micro-tension around the user’s head, resulting in an extremely stable and supremely comfortable fit thanks to a unique roping mechanism. This approach was developed to combat the discomfort of most other headband products and PAPR helmets with added weight. The Optrel Isofit headgear has a symmetrical adjustment feature that ensures the helmet is secured directly in the centre of the user’s head. The weight has remained low despite the complex mechanism, as with most standard comfort headbands. The headband is easily adjustable to the head with a finer rasterised adjustment knob and with exchangeable pads; this offers added comfiness when wearing.

Spares and add-ons for a powered air welding helmet system: how to pick the right part and when to change it.

How do I check a part is right for my powered air helmet system?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Start with the data plate or label on the blower unit and helmet, and the manual that came with the system. These give the system name and part references. If you still have the old part, look for a reference printed or moulded on it and match it exactly.

Helmet parts, blower parts and battery parts are usually different families, so say which one you are replacing. Be wary of mixing parts from another system, because filters, seals and connectors are normally designed to work together. If you are unsure, our team can help you check before you order.

How do I know when the main filter needs changing?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Follow the manual first, because change points depend on the maker, the filter and how dirty the work is. The HSE says filters should be changed when they are damaged or visibly contaminated, and replaced if breathing through them becomes noticeably harder. On a powered system, a low-flow alarm or warning light is often the sign of a clogged filter or a flat battery.

Do not wait for a fixed date if the filter looks dirty, wet or damaged. Keep a note of when you fit each filter so you can spot a pattern in your own work.

What does an activated carbon filter add, and does it replace the particle filter?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

No. In welding systems the particle filter is what deals with the fume. A carbon layer or filter is added to take out some odours and certain gases, ozone being the usual example, but only within its limits and only for what the maker rates it for.

A particle filter does not stop gases, so do not assume a standard system covers them. If gases or strong smells are a concern in your work, check the maker's rating for the filter, your risk assessment and the fume guidance for your process before choosing one.

Can I use a magnifying lens inside my helmet?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Many helmets have a clip-in or snap-in magnifying lens, sometimes called a reading or cheater lens, in set strengths. It is meant to let you see close work clearly without reading glasses, but only a lens made for your helmet will sit and seal properly.

Check the manual for which strengths and fitting method suit your helmet, and choose a strength that gives a clear view at your normal working distance. Do not fit a lens that does not seat firmly, and fit it only as the manual describes so the main viewing window and seals are not disturbed. If vision is poor, see an optician.
