Answers for buyers choosing and looking after compact and extended-neck water-cooled TIG torches in the 180 amp class.
Many makers put the point at which water cooling becomes worthwhile at around 200 amps, although some suggest a higher figure, so treat it as a rough guide rather than a rule. Water cooling matters most if you weld at high current for long arc-on times, because coolant carries heat away from the head and power cable, so the head can be smaller and lighter. The trade-off is more equipment: you need a cooler, coolant and extra hoses, so the set-up is less portable than an air-cooled torch. Always check the torch's rated current and duty cycle on its data plate and in the manual, and remember the rating assumes the coolant is flowing as the maker specifies.
A longer neck lets the cup and tungsten reach into recessed joints, deep corners and areas behind obstructions where a standard head and handle would foul the work. It is mainly a reach and visibility solution for awkward joints. The trade-off is that the handle sits further from the arc, so the torch can feel less balanced and needs a steadier hand. Pair it with the correct cup for the joint, check that gas coverage is still good at the end of the reach, and make a trial weld on scrap before committing to the real job.
Never start welding with a water-cooled torch unless the cooler is filled and running. Makers advise checking that coolant is circulating while you weld, and with many coolers you can see a strong return flow into the coolant tank when the system is working. If the torch or cable becomes unusually hot, stop and let it cool, then check the coolant level, the flow, any kinked or blocked hoses and whether the coolant is contaminated. Persistent overheating means the torch should be checked by a competent person rather than used until it fails.
Check that all coolant connections are leak-tight each time you set up, and look at the O-ring on the torch body before each start-up to make sure it is undamaged. Makers also advise inspecting coolant hoses, seals and connections regularly and replacing any that are damaged or leaking. A leak at the head, neck or hose should be fixed promptly because it can also lead to weld defects. When you disconnect the torch, seal the coolant hoses with the plug supplied so coolant does not spill. Before any maintenance, isolate the power source and shut off the gas.
