A welding helmet is one of the most important personal protective equipment a welder can possess. A welding helmet is designed to protect the eyes and skin from sparks and vision damaging ultraviolet and infrared rays. Welding helmets can be split into two types, passive and auto darkening.
Traditional Passive welding helmets are fitted with a fixed shade lens which remains darkened at all times. While these helmets provide rugged protection and are relatively inexpensive, it can take some practice preparing welds for inexperienced welders.
Auto darkening welding helmets feature the best of both worlds, by having a light state to prep the weld and automatically switch to a dark state during welding. This auto darkening function occurs in milliseconds, protecting the welder from harmful light emissions at all times. These helmets permit more continuous work, reducing unnecessary stop-and-start time and the need for a welder to readjust a helmet and set up positioning.
