Spares and add-ons for a powered air welding helmet system: how to pick the right part and when to change it.

Do I still need extraction if I wear a powered air helmet?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Usually yes. The HSE's welding fume guidance says to avoid or reduce exposure first, then use local exhaust ventilation to take fume away at source, and then add suitable respiratory protective equipment where extraction cannot give adequate control. Outdoors, where extraction does not work well, suitable RPE is expected.

So a powered helmet and its filters are one layer of control, not a replacement for extraction indoors. Your risk assessment decides what is needed for your process, metal and location, so check it before relying on the helmet alone.

How do I know when the main filter needs changing?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Follow the manual first, because change points depend on the maker, the filter and how dirty the work is. The HSE says filters should be changed when they are damaged or visibly contaminated, and replaced if breathing through them becomes noticeably harder. On a powered system, a low-flow alarm or warning light is often the sign of a clogged filter or a flat battery.

Do not wait for a fixed date if the filter looks dirty, wet or damaged. Keep a note of when you fit each filter so you can spot a pattern in your own work.

What does a spark protector do, and when should I replace it?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A spark protector is a screen that sits in front of the filter so that sparks and spatter do not burn into it or reach the blower. It is a wearing part: it takes the hits that would otherwise damage the filter.

Makers generally say to replace it if it is bent, burnt through, clogged or no longer seats properly, and not to run the system without it fitted. How often depends on the process, so look at it regularly rather than waiting for a set period. Always check the manual for the right type for your system.

What does an activated carbon filter add, and does it replace the particle filter?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

No. In welding systems the particle filter is what deals with the fume. A carbon layer or filter is added to take out some odours and certain gases, ozone being the usual example, but only within its limits and only for what the maker rates it for.

A particle filter does not stop gases, so do not assume a standard system covers them. If gases or strong smells are a concern in your work, check the maker's rating for the filter, your risk assessment and the fume guidance for your process before choosing one.
