    Kemppi Air Fed Parts FAQs

Spares for powered and air-fed welding helmet systems, and how to work out the right part for your set-up.

Why can't I use a dust filter to protect against welding gases?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Particle filters only trap solid particles and fume. They do not remove gases or vapours, so a particle filter alone does not protect against gases produced by some welding and cutting work. HSE welding guidance makes the same point about the particulate filters used on disposable masks and half masks.

If your risk assessment says gas or vapour protection is needed, you need a filter specifically rated for that, and the system must be approved to take it. Check the markings on the old filter and the instructions for your unit, and ask the maker or our team if you are unsure which type your system uses.

Can I wear an air-fed or powered helmet with a beard?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

It depends on the type of facepiece. HSE guidance says tight-fitting masks rely on a seal against the skin, and stubble or a beard stops a good seal. Loose-fitting powered helmets and hoods work differently: the unit keeps a flow of clean air through the headtop, so they need no tight seal.

That said, there are limits. Makers usually set limits on facial hair and the helmet must be the right size and correctly adjusted for the wearer. Check your unit's instructions and your employer's RPE assessment, especially where the system includes a separate face seal.

How do I work out which spare part fits my air-fed system?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Start with the data plate, the instruction manual and the part number printed or moulded on the old part. Air-fed systems are made up of separate items (helmet shell, face seal, headband, filter, breathing tube, flow unit, battery, belt), and each maker designs them to work as a set.

Write down the system name or type, the marking on the part and any version or year shown. If the number is worn off, a photo of the part and the unit data plate usually lets our team help you match it. Avoid guessing from appearance alone, as parts can look alike but differ in fit or performance.

Can I mix parts from different makers or different system ranges?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

It is best not to. Powered and air-fed systems are approved and tested as complete assemblies, and the protection level depends on that whole combination of helmet, tube, filter and power unit working together. Swapping a filter, tube or seal for one from another range can change airflow or fit and may invalidate the approval.

HSE guidance advises that replacement parts should preferably come from the original maker so the equipment keeps its stated performance. Check the manual to see which parts are approved for your system, and ask the maker or supplier if the instructions do not say.
