What is a monkey mask and who is it for?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A monkey mask is a flexible leather welding hood that covers your head and neck, with a window or lens at the front to see through. Because it is soft and compact rather than a rigid shell, it is popular with welders who work in cramped places, such as tanks, pipework, vessels and under machinery.

It also appeals to people who want good all-round cover of the head and neck against spatter and heat. Some versions have a fixed lens, some have flip-up goggles and some have an auto-darkening filter.

Why are monkey masks good for confined spaces?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

In tight spaces a bulky rigid helmet can knock against the walls or snag, and its shell can get in the way of your head position. A flexible leather hood has no hard edges to catch, so it slips in and out more easily and moves with your head.

It also covers the sides and back of the head and the neck, which helps against spatter dropping from above or bouncing around. Confined spaces have their own serious risks, especially fume and lack of fresh air, so never rely on the mask for those. Follow your safe system of work.

Does a monkey mask protect me from welding fume?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

No. A leather hood protects against heat, sparks, spatter and radiation, but it does not filter the air you breathe, and fume can pass into the hood from underneath. Welding fume is a serious health hazard, and in confined spaces it can build up quickly.

You need separate fume control, such as local exhaust ventilation, and suitable respiratory protection if your risk assessment says so. Never assume the mask offers breathing protection. Some people use a respirator under the hood, but check that the two are compatible.

Why does the type of stitching matter?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Ordinary thread can burn through when it is hit by spatter or heat, which allows seams to open and spatter to get in. Welding gear is often sewn with heat-resistant thread, such as aramid fibre, which does not melt or burn away like ordinary thread.

It is worth checking that a mask is stitched with heat-resistant thread and that the stitching is in good condition. If the seams fray, or the thread is scorched or broken, repair or replace the hood.
