Not too sure which helmet is right for you? Check out our welding helmet buying guide to help you choose!
The Optrel E3000 PAPR system is interchangeable between helmets and can also be used with the Clearmaxx Grinding Helmet for more comfort, air and visibility.
Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing a complete auto-darkening helmet and powered respirator package.
A ready-to-weld package combines an auto-darkening welding helmet with a powered air-fed respirator unit, so you get head, eye, face and respiratory protection that are intended to work together. Typically it includes the helmet, a blower unit, a battery and charger, a breathing hose, filters and a belt or harness.Check the contents list of the exact package, because items such as spare filters or a spark pre-filter are not always included. Buying matched parts also avoids doubt over whether the combination has been tested and approved together.
Think about the work you do. Look at the viewing area, the lens clarity and how the helmet feels on your head for long periods. Some shells are made for general welding, some for tight spaces, and some can be worn over or with a hard hat.Try to compare the lens specification, the weight and balance, the adjustment of the headband and the side visibility. A helmet you find comfortable will actually be worn all day, which matters more for your protection than any single feature.
Auto-darkening filters are classified for optical quality, how even the shade is across the lens, how little it varies with viewing angle, and how quickly it reacts. Better ratings give a clearer, more consistent view, which reduces eye strain on long jobs. For most welders, high optical quality, a wide shade range and adjustable sensitivity and delay are the practical points. Check the shade range covers the processes you use, including low-current TIG, where sensitivity matters most.
Often the blower unit and breathing hose can be moved between compatible helmets or a grinding visor, which is a useful way to expand your protection without buying a second respirator. This works only where the maker states the combination is compatible and approved.Check with the manufacturer's instructions, and do not mix components not designed to work together. The airflow, the connection and the approval of the whole assembly all matter for your safety.
Run time depends on the battery type and condition, the airflow setting and the filter loading. Temperature and a clogged filter can also affect it. Batteries lose capacity as they age and should be replaced when run time drops.Filters last according to the amount of fume and dust they see, so heavy use means more frequent changes. Do not wait for failure. Check the data plate and manual for your own unit, and replace the filter when the airflow warning appears or the filter is damaged or wet.
Many helmets are designed to be worn with prescription or safety glasses, and some models are built to integrate with a hard hat or have attachments for hearing protection. Fit varies a lot between designs.Check that nothing breaks the seal or pushes the lens or visor out of position, and that the airflow still reaches your face. If you work around overhead hazards, choose a design intended for use with head protection, rather than improvising.
